Is Kiteboarding For You?


  • Your never too old for kiteboarding

    • When you think of kiteboarding you probably get images of these crazy 20 something year olds going 30 ft in the air and doing acrobatic maneuvers in the sky. This is not the typical kiteboarder in the state of Minnesota; the largest group of kiteboarders in the area are people in the 35-55 age group. The beauty of kiteboarding is its versatility! A lot of the kiteboarders in Minnesota use kites to do the same things they would do at a ski hill; it's not just for thrill seekers. Kites can be used to just cruise across, or carve big turns in the snow or water, or even for long distance winter backpacking expeditions. Using the kite to lift you up into the air is done by choice and some people just don't have that desire. One of the most important aspects taught in lessons are what causes the kite to lift you off the ground and how to avoid it! This is probably the most important reasons for taking lessons; many beginners that choose not to take lessons end up accidently flying the kite in a manner that lifts them off the ground unexpectedly.

    Kiteboarding is also a great source of exercise. If you're like us workout routines never last, going to a gym or jogging is boring; there's no excitement! Kiteboarding and snowkiting are sports that provide a great workout and are exciting at the same time, making you want to keep working out all day long! You also don't have to be in great shape to kiteboard or snowkite, and kiteboarding doesn't take much muscle either. Most people in their first month of kiteboarding will probably be a little sore since when you're catching on and learning fast you will want to ride all day every day!

  • Kiteboarding and Kitesurfing in an extreme form

    • Kiteboarding can take many forms; probably the most extreme would be what kiteboarders refer to as wake style kiteboarding. Wake style kiteboarding is based on wakeboarding; we use many of the moves developed by wake boarders, as well as a few new ones developed by kiteboarders. So if you like S-bends, handle passes, rallies, and more... kiteboarding is the right sport for you! Good wakeboard boats are normally equipped with a poll used to raise the tow point up to a higher location, making big air easier to attain. With a kite the tow point is much higher, providing for bigger moves, and more handle passes! You use essentially the same maneuver to pop of the water, but when you do this with a kite you get an extra yank off the water from the kite producing lift. The lift produced by the kiteboarding kite provides for bigger, more spectacular moves, and you get to ride all day without having to flip the massive gas bill! One big drawback to wakeboarding is the gas used by the expensive boat... with kiteboarding there is no burning of fossil fuels, just wind energy, which of course is free... and environmentally friendly! Gas prices are probably going to climb upwards of $4.50 a gallon for premium which makes wake boarding a very expensive sport compared to kiteboarding and kite surfing. Also with wakeboarding you have to take turns, but with kiteboarding you and your friends all get to ride... at the same time!

  • Big Air

    • Kites can produce an enormous amount of power that can be used to lift you up into the air. By performing a simple maneuver with the kite kiteboarders can use their kites to pull them upwards of 30 ft in the air, then following the first maneuver Kiteboarders use the kite kind of like a parachute to bring them back to the surface slowly to provide for a soft landing! At first you will only be able to get a few feet in the air but after some practice and kiteboarding instruction you will be able to go big with ease and predictability!   • Kitesurfing

    • One of the most exhilarating experiences you can have in kiteboarding is what we refer to as kitesurfing… riding in big waves. There is nothing like getting over a wave to end up in a trough staring up at a wave twice your height and carving big turns in it until it explodes at which point you engage the kite to speed away from the crushing whitewater! I see guys off the beach of park point sitting on their boards waiting for a wave to come to them... when you're kitesurfing you can spot the big waves, and ride over to them giving you the opportunity to catch many more waves in any particular day. When I am kitesurfing off of park point I ride a wave all the way in and within about a minute I am back to the break line catching another wave... with no paddling! The new style of kites have greatly improved kitesurfing; they allow you to make small jumps over the breaking whitewater, quickly generating power to get away from waves that would otherwise crush you, and the biggest improvement is being able to completely depower the kite so the only thing pushing you is the wave! You don't have to be a surfer to kitesurf; it is close to the same as any other form of kiteboarding with the only exception being that you need to learn to jibe the board, which just lakes a little bit of practice.   • The possibilities are almost endless!

    • People keep coming up with new ideas on how and what to use kites for. In the summer some people ride buggies, mountain boards, and off road rollerblades on soccer fields, salt flats and beaches. One of our favorite ways to use a kite is with ice skates on a freshly frozen lake! Kites can also be used with boats... a few oceangoing shipping fleets are reportedly cutting their fuel usage by up to 40% using kites on downwind trips. Other people are removing the masts on their sailboats and using a kite instead! Some people are also custom designing contraptions so handicapped people can participate in the sport as well; riding on the water, snow, and ice!
