Lake Waconia in on the west side of the twin cities (ST. Paul, Minneapolis) metro area of Minnesota is the best kiting spot in the around the twin cities area. This lake works for almost every wind direction; the exception would be easterly winds, northeast and southeast work but the wind is slightly off shore at the launch but still work, however it is difficult to get back upwind to the kiteboarding launch. The spot we use as a kiteboarding launch is the DNR boat launch, there is a small somewhat tree covered grassy rigging area and a decent sized sandbar just out from the northern part of the boat launch area. Lake Waconia is a big round lake that is about 3 miles across in any direction making for the smoothest wind in the twin cities Metro area of Minnesota.


Lake Waconia in Minnesota is not a good spot for beginners, the wind, while being the best in the twin cities area can be very gusty and is typically onshore, also with the boat launch just downwind of where you launch the kite it is important you know what you are doing to use this launch. Superior Kiteboarding School does not offer summer Kiteboarding or kitesurfing lessons at this location because it is not a prime spot to learn to kiteboard like Lake Mille Lacs.
