Kiteboarding, kitesurfing, and snowkiting are names used to describe one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Kiteboarding is a year round sport; in the winter we use downhill skis and snowboards and ride anywhere there is snow and no trees (typically frozen lakes). In the summer we use kiteboarding orientated wake boards and surf boards on larger lakes like Lake Superior and Mille Lacs. Kiteboarding is generally referring to kiteboarding with a wake board on the water, but sometimes means kiting with a snowboard in the winter. Kitesurfing refers to riding in big waves on a surfboard, using the kite to tow out to the breaking waves, and then to tow you into the wave, at this point kitesurfers depower the kite and uses the force of the waves to ride. Snowkiting refers to kiting in the winter on the snow, this is also sometimes called kite skiing and kite snowboarding. These subdivisions of the sport are basically the same thing and are most commonly referred to as kiteboarding and kitesurfing and use the same types of kites. Kiteboarding is really just a new form of sailing; the kite is the sail and you're the boat! The power from the kite is directed into a harness you wear around your waist, making cruising around in the snow and water almost effortless! Since kiteboarding uses wind power it is a very affordable sport, there are no lift tickets to buy or gas to put into the boat. The wind is free, once you purchase your equipment you can ride for free for years to come. To describe kite boarding and kites surfing in a simple and understandable way... a kiteboarding kite is just a sail that you fly on 4 lines. Two of the lines on a kiteboarding kite harness the power from the kite; these lines attach to a harness you ware around your waist. Since the power from the kite goes into the harness you can ride for hours without your arms getting tired. The other two lines attach to the bar you hold in your hands and are used to turn the kite and control the amount of power the kite produces. Lastly, the sail boat is you and your board! Due to the light weight and efficiency of the board compared to a sailboat kiteboarders can reach speeds upwards of 60mph! |
